The National Auto Sport Association's Mid-Atlantic Region is pleased to announce a three-event "off season" autocross championship at Virginia Motorsports Park outside Petersburg, Virginia! These Winter Triplecross events will occur on Sunday November 23 2008, Sunday December 7 2008, and Sunday January TBA 2009 (tentatively the 11th or 18th, with a backup date shortly thereafter in case of winter weather.) Participation at each round is open to NASA members for $30 and NASA nonmembers for $40. Entries will be limited to 75 drivers per event to guarantee at least 5 or 6 runs each. Course designs for the series will be provided by national champion Mike "Junior" Johnson from Evolution Performance Driving School. NASA member participants will earn points toward the NASA Mid-Atlantic Winter Triplecross Championship, and be eligible for trophies & prizes TBA. Pre-registration for round 1 on November 23 is open here: http://www.nasaproracing.com/ems/event/802 Pre-registration round 2 on December 7 is open here: http://www.nasaproracing.com/ems/event/803 And pre-registration for round 3 will open in November. Pre-registration is highly recommended to guarantee an entry and a specific car number. At-track registration fees will be $35 members / $45 nonmembers. The $10-per-event nonmember surcharge is waived if a driver pre-registers for all three events and a one year NASA membership for a total of $134 (versus $120 to attend all three events as a nonmember.) NASA membership benefits for that extra $14 are explained at http://www.nasaproracing.com/aboutnasa/member_benefits.html Please enjoy these in-car videos from prior NASA autocrosses at VMP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bw-DKHcBNhQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iockszi4-UI Autocross events are the most entry-level form of sports car racing and have taken place all over the world since the 1950's (when they were better known as "gymkhana" events.) Participants simply drive as fast as possible one at a time against the clock. Top speeds are usually less than 65 miles per hour because the sport is intended to encourage vehicle handling and driver skill at real-world speeds. NASA autocrosses are open to any licensed driver in nearly any street or race car, utilizing a classification system designed to produce close competition. Victory and defeat are often separated by mere thousandths of a second. Hey Jon, Will the Jan 09 race be on one of the first two sundays? I am unavailable for the 18th & 25th due to an audit at work. I just wanted to see if it was worth me signing up. Thanks!

We're aiming for the 2nd or 3rd Sunday in Jan. That is the 11th or 18th, with a snow date shortly thereafter. I'll be confirming with VMP soon and posting accordingly. I didn't want to bother 'em until after their big NHRA event this past weekend...
Please stay tuned for details, Jon |

Triplecross round 1, this Sunday 11/23, is now a 2-heat event for a maximum of 60 cars. 33 spots remain available as of Thursday morning.
The updated entry list so far is at http://www.get-fast.net/nasacross/112308reg.htm The weather forecast looks a bit chilly, but otherwise clear and beautiful! Junior has some great course design ideas in mind. Can't wait, Jon |

Great course yesterday, and some quick times out there. Thanks to everyone for making it go so smoothly. After watching the runs during second heat, it became obvious that you really had to link the sections together to get a good time. I was taking it section by section and looking but not thinking ahead.
I've had Azenis overheat before but never had trouble getting heat, the excessive drifts to try and heat them were fun though! That blue M coupe, was flying I really that you'd get the clean 54. Brian |

I agree, great course, nice 40,50,60mph momentum type course with flow, a little tight at the end but heah, needed a deep breath after every run. Got to exercise 2nd gear some. Eight 60 second runs, all you Tidewater guys are missing out, make the drive. 12/7

Eight 60 second runs, all you Tidewater guys are missing out, make the drive. 12/7 Later Gil I'm glad that you all liked the course. It's a shame that the last two events we couldn't get more people out. VMP is a great site, and allows for great variety, but with only 50 people coming out it's hard to afford to put events on. NASA is a fun and SAFE group to run with. (no matter what some people say) Jon has allowed me to come in and put the courses together for this series of events, and hopefully this will allow some of the local folks to see what a more National style course is like. The key to course design is making a course flow, not having a lot of off courses, not having a ton of cones going down every run, and an equal amount of fast and slow sections. (yet not exceeding the 60ish mph range) There really is no reason for everything to be so tight that there is only one line. I will admit that I do use a lot of cones, but I use them in a way to allow for everyone to see where the course goes. Using just a gate to mark everything is what causes so many off courses. If anyone has any suggestions of things that they like or dislike, let me know, and I'll try to take that into consideration at the next event. See you all then, Mike "Junior" Johnson Evolution Performance Driving School |

If I didn't have schedule conflicts I'd definitely have been at the last two events. I had a great time on the last course you designed. Hopefully I'll be back up there soon.

I had to work yesterday afternoon myself. Since the South Carolina Autocross championship event has been moved from Myrtle Beach (was going to visit family) on the weekend of Dec 6th, i may sign up for the next event in December. Someone call Tim Aro and get him to bring the runner up at nats CSP car and i'll be there for sure. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

That should be interesting to watch, cool that we can get dual use out of the facility too.
I'll be sure to bring my grip mentality next time so no one gets confused thinking the drift event has started early (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) See yall there! Brian |

LOL. Although it is NOT a drift event. Drifting isn't allowed at VMP. It's a gymkhana. Sorta like an autocross, but smaller/slower, and much more complicated. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

I'm gonna sign up for both of these events. Sounds like a great way to cap the year off. Jon - will the NASA tech be good for the gymkhana event?
ps - anyone have some street tires i can borrow? |

Yes the autoX tech should be good for both activities.
I am wondering about RA1's/888's up front and Kumho MX's out back on the E36 for the gymkhana... the goal being good bite and crisp turn-in, but with rotation on command by simply squeezing the loud pedal. Hmmmmmmmm, Jon |

Here's what they have in mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJrEJb0HaeY That's cool. How about throwing in one higher speed section going into a pivot cone, like in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nq1mYp_3d8 I am wondering about RA1's/888's up front and Kumho MX's out back on the E36 for the gymkhana... the goal being good bite and crisp turn-in, but with rotation on command by simply squeezing the loud pedal. Hmmmmmmmm, That's close to what i'm gonna do. Got some MX's (need to remount) for the rear and some 710's for the front. |
